SMM: Gold in the Scarsโ€”How “Kintsugi” is Redefining Leadership in Southern Mindanao

The ancient Japanese art of Kintsugi teaches us that a broken pot repaired with gold becomes stronger and more beautiful than the original. This profound imagery set the stage for the Southern Mindanao Mission (SMM) Leadership Retreat held from February 12โ€“14, 2026, at the Wongโ€™s Multipurpose Building in General Santos City. For three days, the Mission Compound became a space of restoration, where leaders were invited to stop hiding their struggles and instead see them as the “cracks” that build authentic, resilient leadership.

The retreat featured a powerhouse lineup of lecturers who brought a blend of psychological insight and deep spiritual wisdom. Pastor Ron and Jennevi Yabut provided a unique perspective on the intersection of emotional health and ministry, while Pastor Geof and Mrs. Mags Tio shared the raw, beautiful realities of navigating the pressures of leadership as a partnership. Adding to the depth of the sessions, Pastor Josie Asencio challenged the attendees to embrace vulnerability, reminding everyone that a leaderโ€™s greatest testimony often comes not from their successes, but from how they rose after being broken.

The atmosphere at the Mission Compound was one of rare transparency. In a role where many feel the need to appear “unbreakable,” the Kintsugi theme offered a much-needed breath of fresh air. Through heartfelt lectures and small-group reflections, participants explored the idea that the “gold” in our lives is Godโ€™s graceโ€”filling the gaps left by burnout, disappointment, and personal trial. By the time the event concluded on Valentineโ€™s Day, there was a visible shift in the room; the focus had moved from maintaining a perfect image to becoming a “mended” vessel.

As the leaders of Southern Mindanao return to their respective fields, they carry with them a renewed sense of purpose. They leave General Santos City not just with better strategies, but with the courage to lead from a place of honesty. Because of the Kintsugi retreat, the mission is now led by men and women who understand that their scars are not something to be ashamed ofโ€”they are the proof that God is still at work, making something beautiful out of every broken piece.
